Last week, Quitman Elementary school held its annual Scholastic Book Fair, sponsored by the Elementary Library. The week-long event included fun for the whole family with “Family Night” on Tuesday the 15th, and the annual “Grandparent’s Breakfast” on Thursday the 17th. The Elementary PTO provided breakfast for students and grandparents first, and then the grandparents got to go shopping at the book fair with their grandkids. According to librarian Michael Pettiette, “about 50% of our sales happen on Grandparent’s Breakfast Day.”
Pettiette also stated that this year the book fair raised their highest total ever with $12,000. Pettiete added that “all profits from the fair are turned into books and materials for the library.” One of the great things about including families at the book fair is listening to them speak of their own childhood memories from attending book fairs when they were in elementary school. Pettiete stated that “Many times throughout the week I'll hear, ‘I used to love the book fair when I was a kid.’ It is funny how it is 2022 but some things are still the same over the years.”
